As a note: IGZ isn't the only alternative to playing AoE2 on the Internet. I know you have used Hamachi in the past, which is solid, but my experiences have been really laggy with it. Directly connecting is the best method though.

If everyone has the ability to open P2P router ports, then you can simply directly connect via the host's IP address. It's an all or nothing with this, if someone can't open their ports, then they wont be able to play, so Hamachi is a good backup to allow everyone to play. IGZ also requires the opening of the P2P ports. I only threw IGZ out there because it's good for if a few people want to play but don't have enough people for a game bigger game.

Oh, that would explain why some people can't connect sometimes. If I have learned anything from AoE2 networking its that if it works one time it may never work again. It has always been touchy for us even when we LAN.

We (our clan) has a good setup to test out the p2p port opening this summer because we are split between two cities and LAN will not be possible.

Once Psychopomp gets settled back in from vacation, we will have to try this out.
