I don't always check the tf2 blog because well, they only update it about twice a month. I found this linked off of one of their posts though and wanted to share for those that didn't catch it. It allows you too see what other people have in their backpacks. You can nab the steam ids from here: arresteddevelopmentclan.com/steamFriends.php You can look up using the SteamID or Steam Community URL name such as: http://steamcommunity.com/id/Spectre_____Polly_Pockethttp://www.tf2items.com/

From what I understand, crafting is to make weapons that you have not gotten yet, so you don't have to get them the old way. It doesn't make new weapons, just gets you unlockable weapons.
