So I have read this article and feel only slightly different than I did before. For one, he is wasting his time. Video gamers cannot boycott stuff, we don't have the organization or the knowledge of what goes on to understand how corporations are molding this industry. Take MW2 for example.
Corporations, be it MS, Blizzard, Activision, Valve, nVidia, Intel, whoever. They have a plan for how they want to run things and they do it. Standards get made based on popularity and not always on what's best for everyone. This is not something new, see: Beta max or any other 'better' technology dropped because the initial cost was too high. Companies are going to look at the bottom line and gamers are going to completely fall into the marketing(including price) of said product.
So OpenGL is better, great. Who's to say that better graphics is all people are going to want? People want their favorite game franchises from their favorite game developers and could care less about the API used. Maybe The Freeman in Episode3 will have more facial features, but the game will probably suck because everyone at Valve had to learn a whole new API and is pissed off about it.
I understand the portability of OpenGL, but I guess because I am on top of my Windows Upgrades, it doesn't apply. I guess if you use Mac or Linux, I never really thought of you as a gamer and therefore don't consider your platform an option because it never really was. Although that has changed immensely in the last 5 years.
